EPMHA and SUMMIT HOCKEY ACADEMY
Hockey Development Program

One of Elbow Park Minor Hockey Association’s objectives over the last couple of years has been to provide an all-encompassing hockey program for our members so that seeking additional instruction is not necessary. In this endeavour, we are more than pleased to announce our hockey development arrangement with Summit Hockey Academy.

This program will provide on-ice skill development and power-skating, and advice in off-ice training, nutrition, and sport psychology: all within the EPMHA hockey program. This program will also be extended to EPMHA coaching staff so we continue to provide quality coaching for our players. EPMHA ice time will be allocated for all of our players to have this development experience within their EPMHA hockey program.

We are excited about the expertise Summit will bring to our players and to the coaches but we are also equally impressed with Summit’s approach to considering the sports and academic lives of our children.

SUMMIT HOCKEY ACADEMY

The director of Summit Hockey Academy is Wayne Dougherty who has been a teacher with the C.B.E. for over a decade.  Wayne has an extensive hockey background which includes hockey’s highest levels: University, WHL, AJHL, AMHL, Hockey Alberta’s under seventeen and under sixteen programs along with running various development camps for all ages and abilities including NHL players. In addition Wayne also scouts for the WHL Everett Silvertips. Starting in 2006, Summit Hockey Academy will be providing the hockey development program at West Island College in Calgary.
“At Summit Hockey Academy we believe players will have fun when they're challenged, surpassing and attaining new goals.  Summit Hockey understands the evolving needs of players. Student academics will improve as they apply learned behavior in sport to the classroom.  Finally, higher activity levels tend to produce better students academically, socially and physically.

If you would like to learn more about this new program you can visit our website www.summithockey.ca or contact Wayne at: 239-7757 or by email at wdougherty@summithockey.ca

Team Manager Responsibilities

Most importantly the team manager must be comfortable with, and have access to, email in order to receive information and send information to the team. It is helpful to also have some experience with excel in order to create a team list on file.

• Team list - The team list should include the player’s name, number, parent’s names, address, email, and all phone numbers. This can be handed out to all parents shortly after the season begins. You may also want to create a wallet sized laminated list with the player’s names and numbers on one side and the parent’s names and phone numbers on the other side as a quick reference for parents.

• Jersey assignment - The manager will work with the head coach in handing out jerseys at the beginning of the season, keeping track of number assignments, and then collecting the jerseys at the end of the season. The jerseys are then returned to the Elbow Park Equipment Manager.

• Ice times - Typically the head coach receives the ice times (in one or two month chunks) and relays this information to the manager. The manager will sometimes also work with the coach to set up games with other leagues or with teams within our league. It is then the manager’s responsibility to inform team members of all practices and games. Typically we also get some outdoor ice, however if it is too cold (usually below –20) then the manager needs to inform everyone that the practice is cancelled, usually 1-2 hours prior to the scheduled practice (this also applies to any other practice or game that may get cancelled or rescheduled). At games, the manager fills in the game sheets with the player’s names and numbers and ensures they get to the time keeper??? The home team coach sends in the sheet???

The Team Manager or the Team Activities Coordinator

• Tournaments - The Team Manager or the Team Activities Coordinator also works with the coach to sign-up for tournaments throughout the season. Once the team has decided on which tournaments to enter, the manager collects the fees from each player entered and forwards a cheque, along with the team info, to the tournament coordinators (an example of where experience with excel comes in handy). The team manager may also decide to run a few raffles to collect money during the season and the money collected could go towards tournaments and social events. This is something you may want to discuss with the parents to see if they would rather pay as they go or go the raffle route. Keep in mind that it is not always easy to collect money from 12-15 different sets of parents.

• Pictures – The manager will be notified when pictures are scheduled and can then relay this information to the parents. When the pictures are ready the manager will pick them up and distribute them to the players.

• Social Events - The manager or social coordinator typically organizes a few social events for the team and their parents - one at the beginning of the season to meet all the parents, one around Christmas time and one at the end of the season. This is optional, however it is really nice to get to know the parents from the team and let the kids have fun together off the ice.

Many of the above responsibilities can be delegated to other parents on the team (tournament organizer, social coordinator, picture coordinator, etc).
